These unique pieces are either wheel-thrown or hand-built by Sam Lee, with their vibrant colors and patterns shaped by the natural elements in the pit-firing process. The interplay of chemicals, the fire’s intensity, and the placement of each piece determine the final look, making every item truly one-of-a-kind. The outcome is always a surprise, reflecting the unpredictability of this ancient technique. Pitfired pieces are not naturally watertight because this process does not use a glaze. With this particular piece, I have gone an extra step and used a quartz sealer on the interior so it can now hold water. These pieces were locally pit-fired at Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
